I have been experiencing the struggle surrounding classroom management in my Link2Practice classroom; however, I can only imagine how much harder this would be as a substitute teacherā¦
During the EdCamp this week, the most valuable talk that I participated in was the talk about classroom management. Most of the questions that people were asking Joanna had never even occurred to me before. I still havenāt really accepted the fact that I might spend some time as a TOC and as a result, I havenāt done any research on this career path. The discussion we had about how TOCs can best prepare themselves for any classroom environment was eye opening. Joannaās strategy about having an āemergency sub bagā full of lessons and activities struck me as a genius idea. She also highlighted how important it is as a TOC to leave feedback on how the day went which is not something I would have thought of even though I can understand why it is so essential.
I understand that most people who are reading this blog wonāt have been at the classroom management discussion so I found a YouTube video that covers similar content to what we discussed (I would suggest skipping the first couple of minutes to get to the more valuable content :). I found this one relatable because the speaker in the video is quite new to teaching and therefore, the content is simple and answers some general questions that I had as an inexperienced teacher.
Have a great week!

The classroom management discussion was really helpful for me too! I actually got the chance to talk with a TOC at my Link2Practice school this week. This TOC had actually studied for high school teaching, but was at an elementary school (which we’ve been told could be a common occurence as we start substituting). He shared with me that this age group was not what he was used to and that it had been a rough day for him and I totally understand that because I can’t imagine myself going into a high school class to teach.
In any case, the emergency sub bag is definitely something I want to try in the future and I would think about including things that may be useful for a high school class such as, a deck of cards for a variety of math games or ice-breaker bingo sheets. Taking the bag online as a emergency sub folder/document would be cooI too. I could have a few different kahoot games prepared for different age/grade levels and find approproate movies or shows to show students.
