** Update from my Inquiry 4 post: The Three Ranges Brewing has agreed to let me showcase my painting in their taproom! I will be dropping it off sometime during reading break.
This post was suppose to be about craft fairs and farmer’s markets but I have decided to save that post for another week. Up until this point, my posts have mostly been about my entrepreneurship research so I wanted to spice it up by adding some actual art content.
On Monday, I started an acrylic painting on a 24″ by 36″ canvas. Before I started this project, I had a general idea of what my theme would be. I wanted to try a pink underpainting (I’ll explain what that is in a bit) and paint a portrait of the drive through the Pine Pass (a drive I have done a million times throughout my life). Next, I went onto the BC HighwayCam site to find some reference photos. Here is the one I selected:

Next, I sketched out a draft.

I made some adaptations to the reference photo in my draft. It’s now winter time and there are moose on the highway.
Now, I will start the underpainting. Like the name states, this is just a coat of paint that will get covered with a final coat (usually the underpainting is done in the opposite colour of the final colour). Here is a video that explains the process more thoroughly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5guZr1Pjb0

I always do an underpainting first because it’s an easy way to just get some paint on the canvas without any pressure of doing something wrong (blank canvas’ can be kind of intimidating so this is a nice way to get over that initial feeling). If you look at any of my previous projects really closely, you will usually find undertones of red or orange which typically contrast with the cool colours of the painting.
Now it’s time to for the real colours!

This is as far as I’ve gotten this week. I will post a photo when I’m done!
Thanks for reading once again! 🙂
