Inquiry 1: My Vision

This project will be a huge step in working towards a life long goal of mine: To have my own art business.

My vision for my company is to be able to travel around BC to different artist fairs and farmer’s markets to sell my art. I want to have a stand where I will sell my original works as well as prints (on cards, clothing, etc.) to people who also like having fun outside. However, this might sound like a fun and achievable plan but I am not the first person to come up with this idea. If I intend on making a profit off of this business (which I certainly do), I will need to compete with tons of other artists. To address this challenge, my initial question is obvious: How am I going to make my business uNiQuE????

I already have some ideas.

So technically this will not be the start of my business because, as of 2020, I have been selling my paintings off of my Instagram account as well as in a cafe ( ) owned by some family friends. My main goal for this project is to expand my business and make it more professional so that I can get my name out into the community and hopefully attend some cool events. So far, I have been successful with my art sales which has been super encouraging! Getting some solid proof that people like my creations enough to pay for them has given me the confidence and the motivation to try and expand my little side hustle.

Seeing as I have been selling my art for a couple of years now, I have an idea of what my business theme is, what kind of customers I attract, and what method works best for selling my products. Like many artists, I like to paint what makes me happy so lots of my inspiration comes from local landmarks (from around my home in Prince George, BC) and outdoor sports. I have discovered that paintings of places and activities that people can relate to are super popular (luckily for me). I have also learned that, in my experience, people are much more likely to buy art if they can see it in real life. For example, I have had a lot more success selling my work in the cafe then I have over Instagram.

By the end of this semester, my goals are to have…

  • A name/theme/logo for my business
  • An idea of how much stock I will need before I can start selling
  • Started compiling art
  • Experimented with canvas prints/art on clothing
  • A pricing system
  • Ideas of how/where I will sell my products
  • The materials I will need

That’s it for now! Next week I will be talking about my interview with a local artist and how she made her business so successful. Thanks for reading.
